Feb 25, 2010 (AFP)-Burma’s Supreme Court will rule on Friday on detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s appeal against an 18-month extension to her house arrest, a court notice said.

The court will issue its verdict at 10am (0530 GMT), said the notice posted outside the court building in Rangoon on Thursday.

The 64-year-old Suu Kyi was ordered in August to spend another 18 months in detention after being convicted over an incident in which a US man swam to her house. A lower court rejected an initial appeal in October.

If the Supreme Court turns down her case, Suu Kyi can make a final appeal to military-ruled Burma’s chief justice.

The Nobel Peace laureate has spent most of the past 20 years in detention. Her opposition National League for Democracy party won elections in 1990 but the military government never allowed it to take power.

The military government has promised to hold elections some time this year.
