The unofficial Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh’s eastern Cox’s Bazaar is home to around 30,000 ethnic Rohingya refugees who have fled persecution by the ruling junta in Burma. From 13 to 15 June heavy rains swept across Bangladesh and western Burma, causing heavy flooding and landslides and killing nearly 100.
Kutupalong remained comparatively unscathed but, as these photos from The Arakan Project show, even minor damage to the rudimentary shacks that make up the camp can destroy a home. Up to 300,000 Rohingya are thought to have sought refuge in Bangladesh, and Kutupalong is one of only a number of unoffocial camps that receive no UN assistance despite high levels of malnutrition andpoor infrastructure.
