US secretary of state Hillary Clinton told an Asian security meet Friday it was “deeply concerned” about oppression in Burma, a day after US congress officially approved the extension of sanctions.
Speaking at the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) in Hanoi, Clinton said Burma’s “restrictive electoral laws” further stifled civilians’ lives and made polls due this year “unlikely” to be free and fair.
Washington’s renewal of a ban on imports from Burma for another year sought to pressure the regime over human rights and democracy as well as alleged ties to North Korea.
The senate voted almost unanimously to extend the sanctions, a week after the House took similar action. The bill now goes to President Barack Obama, who is expected to sign it despite his administration’s engagement with Burma.
The law bans trade with companies tied to the junta in Burma. It also freezes such firms’ assets and instructs the US to block international loans for the isolated state.
“The United States must deny this regime the legitimacy it so craves and await the day when the Burmese people will be permitted to govern their own affairs,” said Mitch McConnell, the top Senate Republican and a sponsor of the bill.
McConnell and fellow senators voiced concern about Burma’s elections planned later this year, which most opposition leaders intend to boycott as they fear they will be a sham to legitimize military rule.
Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won the last election in 1990 but was never allowed to take power. The Nobel laureate has spent most of the ensuing two decades under house arrest.
The Obama administration last year launched a dialogue with Burma, concluding that isolating the regime had not worked. But it has said it will only lift sanctions in return for progress on democracy and other concerns.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, on a trip to Asia, voiced concerns about Burma’s military cooperation with North Korea. The Senate voted 99 to 1 to support sanctions, with Senator Mike Enzi, a Republican from Wyoming, casting the sole dissenting vote.
Coy Knobel, a spokesman for Enzi, said that the senator opposed sanctions if they come only from the US and EU and believed it was better to develop broader pressure on the regime.
“Burma is violating human rights, but the question is how best to get them to change that practice. If we could get more help from our allies in the region that would be more effective,” he said.
China is the main military and diplomatic partner of Burma, which has trading relationships with many Asian nations.

“myanmar” sounds very much iritated. But there have been intelligent remarks that the US has not been doing enough. It seems the sound of “shut up” is an image or an echo of a very powerfull tool of the gun-totting colonels and generals of Burma. They can’t understand that other people have rights to free speech.
If they feel free to say “shut up” to an US Secretary of State, imagine how they would treat (it is quite evident in the past how they did) a Burma national in Burma saying dissents (before and after this coming so-called election).
I for one appreciate and thank Mrs. Clington for saying what she said for and on behalf of the US Administration. It is in the interest of the US and the world democratic community just as much as (or more for) the Burmese people.
Just to add a note: One can imagine “myanmar” is now being heartily applauded by the junta chief and associates with a lot of laoughs in chorus and clapping in unison.
Did the media get freedom of speech after Mrs. Clinton gave the speech? Thre are many people who would like to ask about Burma. But only three-arranged questions came out! People can’t ask anymore. She left suddenly after answering three arranged questions! For Mrs.Clinton, Burma case is not important, believe it or not!
Rather than adding more ‘smart’ sanctions or even ‘dumb’ ones trying to get other countries in the region like China, Thailand, Singapore to do the same will bear meaningful results. In Burmese we call it catching frogs with a bag full of holes. Why did sanctions on Apartheid South Africa worked? Because it’s almost ‘universal’. Even then there are black sheep like Margret Thatcher who refused to do so. Why do you think the regime can survive for such a long time? Because there are more like ‘myanmar’ who may live on chewing bones thrown to them by the military and their families. Unless it’s a Revolution of the Spirit nothing will change in Burma. Didn’t they say, “societies of sheep beget government of wolves”?
Ok, have you ever thought of sanction strengthening the junta and hurting the livelihood of normal Burmese people inside the country? US is doing something to feel good but not doing something to do good for the people inside. Look, everybody is celebrating (at the expense of normal Burmese people suffering from economic difficulties inside) because sanctions continue to hold.
