Nine people were killed in Mon State on Tuesday after the vehicle they were traveling in drove off the Rangoon-Moulmein Road, according to the Ministry of Information.
The white canter car with Rangoon license plates fell into a ravine after hitting a bridge wall, the ministry said on its website. It was believed that the people aboard the bus were on a pilgrimage to mark the start of the Buddhist New Year.
According to police, the vehicle was carrying 20 people, including the driver.
“It hit the bridge wall at high speed and went off the side of the road,” said Police Lt.-Col. Htun Thein. “Six people were killed immediately, one died en route to the hospital, and two others died at the hospital. Another 11 people with serious injuries were sent to Rangoon in ambulances.”
The car overturned while traveling from Thaton to Rangoon, he added.
The driver was from Rangoon, but it wasn’t clear where the passengers were from.
