Burmese opposition icon Aung San Suu Kyi has filed a lawsuit against her estranged brother for contempt of court. The claim was filed against both her brother, Aung San Oo, and a weekly news journal, for publishing an article in which he stated victory for the court case against her that is yet to reach a verdict.

Nyan Win, National League for Democracy’s Central Executive Committee member, and lawyer for Suu Kyi, said a lawsuit was filed at Rangoon division’s High Court on Monday against Aung San Oo, Monitor News Journal editor Myat Khine and publisher Hla Myint Swe.   Last month Monitor News Journal published an article with quotations from Aung San Oo claiming success in his on-going court case against his sister.  He had filed a lawsuit against Aung San Suu Kyi in 2001 demanding half-shares of the lakeside house in Rangoon that was passed down to both children by their late mother, and in which Suu Kyi was kept under house arrest for 14 years.

“Previously, U Aung San Oo filed a lawsuit against Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for part-ownership of the house which is still on-going and yet to hear testimonials from her witnesses,” said Nyan Win.

“However, in July, Monitor news journal published an article with quotations from U Aung San Oo claiming victory for ‘major issues’ in the court case.”

He said the lawsuit was filed under article 2 and 3 of the 1926 Contempt of Court Act and has been accepted by the Rangoon Divisional High Court. The court is to make an announcement for court hearing appointments.

Nyan Win explained that Myat Khine, Monitor News Journal’s editor who wrote the article, and Hla Myint Swe, the publisher, were included in the lawsuit as the law sees editors and publishers as responsible for material printed in their publication.

However, Myat Khine argues that he was only writing what Aung San Oo told him.

“It was solely an opinion by the interviewee and the article was not even a news piece. In news, the writer has to claim responsibility for what he wrote but I just conducted an interview and U Aung San Oo answered,” said Myat Khine.

“I’ll save some things to say in court later. U Shwe Mann often mentions that no one should be above the law. I’ll accept the decision by the law.”

The article, which accuses Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of attempting to claim sole-ownership of the inherited house ‘by hook or by crook’, is the latest in a number of disputes between Aung San Suu Kyi and her brother over the property, now valued at about 3 million US dollars.

Aung San Oo first tried to claim part-ownership of the house in 2000, but his case was dismissed, because as a US citizen it is illegal for him to own property in Burma.

Yes, Daw Suu’s brother has been a pain. But why waste time in a severely flawed legal system to attack him and a newspaper over something that really has no substance. More important things to do. Bigger fish to fry.

  2. Salai says:

What a shame to read this news between world morally-most trusted lady and her blood brother fighting each other against over what their parents had left them to live, a home. A brother and sister who should instead stand together after their parents were gone now start fighting over the most disgraceful thing which will not only build feud between them but leaves how low the morality is among brother and sister.

Even if Suu Kyi has been under house arrest at this lakeside villa for the past several years, the fame, reputation and turned the villa into the global focal point added the immortality not only to the Aung Sans but to the villa itself.

I think Aung San Oo must shower deep in Inya lake at the back of their home since he stained himself with load of dirts outside of Burma and walk fresh with her younger sister. There is not too much time left for both but for the next generation of Aung Sans and freedom of Burma where the lakeside villa is firmly rooted.

  3. Denys Goldthorpe says:

Aung San OO is a spoiler he doesn’t need the money why doesn’t he support his sister, Aung San Su Kyi is a champion of the people. Is he jealous because he doesn’t have the same understanding his sister does for the Burmese people is he jealous because his father would be proud of her and not him.

  4. Kyi Kyi says:

Aung San OO has home in America. He does not need money but he wants to make hard time to her sister who try her best for Burma. He is a man with no brain.

  5. mc says:

Kill this animal F—-r Aung San Oo.Shame on Him as U.S citizen. He is not desired U.S.Citizen.Not even 1% of DNA of Great Father Aung San.Change you F—— name without Aung Sam..Idiot……

By Burmese law A.S.Oo was no legal
right to ANY freehold property from the moment he became a citizen
of another country.I don’t know why he even bothered to claim he is
entitled. He has been given bad advice by his lawyers.

Aung san oo, I am so sorry for your
action. She is only your sister to respect and loving kindness. She is working for everyone to have peace, human right and democracy.Anyhow, the democracy would prevail telling the truth. someone who biased and favored the dictators has to listen and face the law accordingly. The media must stand on truth only.I do hope that everyone will get the lesson to stand tall for truth, human right and democracy.

It is a case between brother and sister. We don’t need an outsider or court, we can solve it by ourselves. Why trust and bring in someone else into family matter. That is what we have been told by NLD leadership and most Burmese leaders for the past several decades for the conflict between Burmese government and ethnic people. I wonder why these words don’t come out and don’t apply to the problem between DASSK and SAO. Don’t get me wrong I respect DASSK for leadership skill and sacrifice for democracy in Burma. But I wonder we have two standards for Burman people and ethnic people if we are brothers and sisters!
For the problem between DASSK and ASO, the property was passed down to both of them so why don’t we all just donate money to ASSK and give the half value of the property to ASO so that he leave his sister alone and for ASSK, she save her reputation and has more time to do better for the country and the people of Burma.

  9. Mee Mee says:

When A.S Oo has not right to claim the house because he is US citizen, will Daw A.S.S Kyi have the right to claim as she also is UK citizen? I think eventually the government will take this land by force.

  10. mika says:

Brainless, hopeless, helpless Aung San Oo.Probably got money from milatary government to do that! or more money from journalist? Daw Aung San Suu Kyi gave away money from her novel prize but u.All about money! Go to the hell.D–k head.
