A local Burmese community has been left terrified after an angry mob of 300 Buddhists viciously attacked a Muslim school and several businesses in a suburb outside Rangoon earlier this week, according to local sources.

It follows news that hundreds of Buddhist nationalists launched a violent assault on a religious school in Thaketa  township on Sunday, after it applied for permission to have its roof repaired. Reports suggest that the mob believed the building was being developed into a mosque.

On Monday, the mob returned to ransack businesses and homes, including hurling bricks and abuse at petrified locals. The violence has spread fear and confusion among local Muslims, who say they have never before had any problems with their Buddhist neighbours. Most of the people DVB interviewed did not believe that the vandals had come from the local community.

“Some [shady-looking] characters arrived in a truck – about three or four of them jumped out carrying sticks, blended into the crowd and began shouting stuff,” a local witness told DVB. “Then a whistle blew from the truck and the three guys in the crowd yelled “get them!” and rallied the crowd [to attack].”

Many local families told DVB they are still too afraid to sleep in their homes and don’t understand why their community was attacked. Over 20 families reportedly fled the area, even though riot police were quickly deployed on the ground.

“We were afraid so we left,” explained a 35-year-old mother. “At night the children don’t sleep, they don’t study. When I leave them at school now they are still shaking with fear.”

A spokesperson for the Islamic Religious Affairs Council Myanmar told DVB that the Muslim school had recently sought approval to renovate its roof, but because the structure had exceeded its permitted height by five feet, the municipal authority subsequently withdrew its authorisation. Rumours then quickly circulated that the school was being built into a mosque.

“I assume they misunderstood about the building – [Muslims] are required to wash themselves before reading the religious text so there are water taps [wash rooms] in Muslim schools,” said Wunna Shwe. “And according to our religious teachings – we have to pray at the prayer time.”

Police confirmed to DVB that four people were detained after the violence – none of which were identified as locals – but were released on Thursday. But Wunna Shwe insisted that both residents and outsiders were likely involved in the violence, which has the potential to trigger further religious tensions in the capital.

Reports suggest that local media, as well as prominent public personalities, played a role in stirring the hostilities. In an article published on 17 December, The Voice Weekly published accusations that a mosque was being developed and quoted inflammatory remarks by the controversial monk Wirathu, who has repeatedly spearheaded Islamophobic campaigns in Burma.

“It is true. [Muslims] are sneakily building mosques at night time,” he told the The Voice Weekly. “There are plenty of those mosques in Burma containing cellars and tunnels underneath like military bases.”

The article was later removed without explanation.

Over the past year, Burma has come under international scrutiny for its treatment of Muslim residents – notably the stateless Rohingya in western Burma, who clashed with local Buddhists in two bouts of violence last year. But this is the first major episode of religious violence to spill into the heart of the capital, which also hosts a large Muslim population.

“Burma has been a country where people of different religious beliefs live together in harmony and it is sad to see we have to be like this to each other when we are living in the age of openness and transparency; what everyone longed for,” said Wunna Shwe.

Buddhist people in MM need to be tolerant of non-Buddhists. MM leaders have to encourage tolerance toward non-Buddhist people. Buddhist monks must preach compassion toward non-Buddhist people.

  2. Bamar says:

This type of religious violence should be dealt with strongly, anyone including monks or whoever it is. What is the different between these people and Islamic extremist? The are same, intolernt people. W been living peacefully with all religion for years and now these religious gangster are there to agitate.

  3. Moha_med says:

    controversial monk Wirathu;Are you kidding?

DVB has no respect to Monk Leader.

  4. Andre Leroux says:

    What the Buddhist religion teach.
To destroy someones place of worship, to kill innocent life,
    rape and murder.
    No; I believe,
its being organised by the military government to prolong their stay.

  5. Burmeseblood says:

My Dear Countrymen, Buddhist Monks and Mindless Thugs: Please refrain from religious intolerance, instigation, hatred and violence. It is not good for the country and the people who live there, irrespective of their creed, religion, language, color and ethnicity. It will scare away foreign companies, discourage foreign investment, turn back potential foreign tourists in the millions….this is what you want for your beloved Motherland and your fellow countrymen? Certainly NOT. Show the world what we WERE for centuries, what we ARE and what we truly WILL BE: peace loving, tolerant, overlooking, coesisting, sharing, helping each other, friendly, non-violent and law-abiding people; we can be always – today and for generations to come..!!

  6. Moe says:

Buddhist Nationalist? they are thus and terrorist. They are in wrong side and destorying the community.

  7. Mg Mg says:

Who are the people behind this ideology to hate and fear of fellow Burmese Muslims? Some fake monks control by the military regime and blind nationalists were spreading rumours and propagandising that Muslims will take over Burma and the world in 21st century. So the Buddhist-Taliban were born out of ignorant. So sad for our country and the people.

  8. Tom Tun says:

Humanbeing feeling such fear born from insecurity. Fear also push people do the things that they will not do in normal sercumstances. Many of the world events and extremisms of Islam has been putting Muslim people in vulnerable state in many places around the world, not just in Burma. My statements are not to protect any Buddhists who involved in social injustice such as the one in the article. I have many muslim friends and they are very good people. They are no different from me and they all share same human feelings. Why should they be treated differently for their faith. Many of muslims people hate their own muslim extremists. Buddhist Burmese people are not open minded when it comes to faith, which is funny because Buddhism itself is not original faith of Burma and Buddhism itself was not original faith of Burma. Does Burmese people really know about muslim faith or these unfortunate event born out of fear base on human psychology? I did not like UN, Human rights groups and some western governments and even some Noble lourate forcing Burma to accept Rohingya as one of Burma own. We should have our own immigration law to protect our own society and our interests, however Burma should be tolerate when it comes to faith. We fight for freedom, but our freedom should not detain someone elese. We should be free from our fear of distrust and different faith. If we do not understand the other people faith, we should learn instead of fear and shutting down ourself and let the fear to do it’s ugly work. Please stop these violance.

  9. Uri Vladeslav says:

    I am from the Balkans.
We have gone through the ethnic
    cleansing very recently.
I have lost all of my good neighbours, property and one of my finger.
Ultimately as of to day, I cannot think what we have gained.
The sooner the Burmise people can find a peaceful way to live side by side. The sooner they will prosper.
There is no short cut for peaceful co-existance.
The Buddhists monks and the military government has to think where they are going.
    To grab some ones property.
Is there any Ghandi supporter in Myanmar. Is there any one can preach peace. What lord Buddha taught?

  10. thein mg says:

always takes 2 to tango, either the monks and mullahs stay of politics or they get out of their robes, you can’t have it both ways.
Laypersons call the tune to the Monks & Mullahs, they are after all humans only and should be made to confine their time to religious activities only.

  11. Andre Le Roux says:

This military government is promoting these Buddhist-Taliban,
so that they can prolong their stay in power.
Suu Kyi is silent not to loose monks vhote.
The clear victim are the Rohyngas.

The UN official are using this as an effort to vacation trip to Myanmar in 5* Hotels.

  12. Stan Marinic. Toronto says:

    The attack at Thaketa Township
    is a prmeditated attack.
The present government and the Buddhist shall has to bear the full responsibility for this henios incedent.
The (ICC)International Criminal Court and the Human Rights Organisation should do everything possible to stop this violence. Failure to this will give more future incidents.

  13. maungg maungg says:

The only peace that we can build in the country is, by building a culture where each respect other and understand their basic needs. In the event of sudden surge in bad activities such as assembling without authorised or valid permission, the authorities should investigate details and open up their findings under the existing law. Do not side for anyside. If they do this will anger the other and the consequences may be worst in future. Something may seem right, but they may be wrong if investigated. Accept this and move on with the process. If the due process is maintained, there is no need to worry or fear about the outcome. This is because it is fair, written and open to all parties at least on the paper. Ground level officials can handle it. No need for the higher top officer to involve in everything. Be fair is the keyword.
