In the light of rumours and conspiracy theories circulating about the murder of an ex-policeman’s family in northern Rangoon, a spokesman has confirmed that the police have not yet identified any suspects.

Police Major Hla Wai of the Rangoon Region Police Force refuted claims that his department released a photograph, portending to show three men standing by a fence, who are alleged suspects in the gruesome killings. The picture has spread widely on Burmese social media, such as Facebook, in recent days.

The police spokesman said the case is still being investigated.

A funeral for the former police officer, Soe Naung, and his family – a wife and two children – was attended by up to a thousand people at the Yeway Cemetery in Rangoon on 22 August.
