A member of the opposition National League for Democracy youth wing is in hospital in Rangoon after being stabbed in the lung during a fight last week.
The incident happened during a brawl between Soe Myat Thu and a friend, and three other men, one of whom is an army captain, according to NLD lawyer Nyan Win. There is no suggestion that the stabbing was politically-motivated.
“On June 4 around 9pm in the evening, there was a fight between two groups of three youths each – we don’t know the details on how it happened,” Nyan Win said, adding that Soe Myat Thu was placed in intensive care in Rangoon General Hospital after the blade punctured his lung.
Nyan Win said that the man carrying the knife “has a criminal record and spent some time in prison”.
The suspect is currently being detained at Rangoon’s Mingalartaungnyunt township police station. The NLD has urged the government to allow it access to information on the case and also to ensure legal procedures are followed during the handling of the incident.
“We want facts and information regarding the case. It will take some time until we can prosecute the man. The coroner’s report plays an important role here – the police are waiting for it,” said Nyan Win.
“The police have already opened a case and are looking for suspects – they have caught one.”

Where is the justice? What worry me is Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Safety.
Where is the justice?
Not at all in Burma for centuries.
I don’t see any in the future either.
Protect yourself, Dude.
The so called government and sucking laws won’t.
Bad guys rule there. And how can the laws be enforced? Simple. Right?
Let’s hope and not give up so easily everyone. I realise I left when I was 12yo., right before Ne Win took over. It’s been over 40 years of totalitarian and a nazi regime. The Burmese people are a genteel race; but also human that even they, I believe have their limits. People are getting fed up of living in constant fear of a bullying and terrifying regime, who rule with force, torture and death. Let’s give our people some credit with having courage to stand up, as they already have and sacrificed their lives. They have had it now and something will be done, as I have prayed for this to happen for years. It’s just a beginning and the new civilian govt., knows that they are being watched very closely by the US and other European countries. And their interest in our country, other than restoring human rights; it has so many rich resources such as teak, emeralds and many others, where they can enter the country and create lucrative businesses thereby, giving the people work. Look at Vietnam — with foreigners coming in and creating lucrative businesses. I for one God willing hope to go back home some day. So, let’s all be positive as hard it is to do. God bless and take care of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Look at South Africa — Mandela spent 30 ears of his life, as sad as it was and that country got rid of apartheid. Suu Kyi has also done the very same thing.
