Three separate blasts have hit Rangoon during the annual water festival, killing at least nine and injuring 75.

The blasts occurred near to Kandawgyi Lake, where hundreds of people were celebrating the festival, known in Burmese as Thingyan. State media in Burma announced the incident but unusually did not point the blame at anyone. Past blasts have often been attributed to ethnic opposition armies.

“We have seen at least 50 wounded people taken to hospital and nine people died,” a witness at Rangoon General Hospital told Reuters, although subsequent reports have said that 75 were wounded.

Three loud explosions were heard at a pavilion near to the lake – most of the pavilions on U Htaungbo Road alongside the lake are run by companies close to the authorities.

“Some people were wounded but we are not in a position to give you further detailed information since necessary investigations are still in progress,” police told Reuters.

A terrorist group calling themselves SPDC claimed full responsiblity threanting more violence if the military rule was discontined in the country after the elections (inside source).

  2. Enza Pallara says:

.. And now MISTER Than Shwe said that they were terrorists against the junta, the NLD members arrested and postpone the elections … who planted those bombs? that it was he ?????? very, very, very sad! poor people of Burma.

  3. scarlet dewi says:

very sad to know about the blast in yangon during thingyan.i think many people died in this blast, nothing gonna change inside myanma as long as than shwe n his junta live.god bless all brave people of myanma.

  4. may myo chit says:

It’s really tragic that happens on these special days. I oppose those who did this. I don’t wanna accuse anyone without knowing who is the real criminal. But what I see is the regimes can’t protect or take care of the public safety. It isn’t the first time . That kind of bomb explosion happened at least 6 times in the past. However, the real criminals are not arrested yet. So, who i have to blame ? For those who did this, dont forget “what goes around comes around “

  5. Denys Goldthorpe says:

This bombing was a pretext by Than Shwe so he can shut down all gatherings of people. He has demonstrated his willingness to murder people like the five month and five year old children in Kler Lwe Htoo District (Nyaung Lin Bin District in Burmese), Karen State.

  6. Kyaw says:

The blasts came from within the close enemy of Nay Shwe Thay Aung.
    Not by any outsiders.
Thanshwe must understand that he is in the middle of his future executors. He must understand that getting along with NLD is safer for the future of his family and his beloved grand son.

  7. burmese says:

I thinks Junta did that happened as usual…. .so stupid and only poor people are suffer the end…..
i thinks Only God can save and no one else….UN,US and EU i don’t thinks so coz since when we are under junta shoe????who can done somethings for people of myanmar???

  8. Keoek Nyayn says:

…and so it begins, this election year. The constitution of this Orwellian state is a “dictation.” The freely elected government continues to be subverted. The self-serving regime denies the poor the right to clean water, and actively supports violence and imprisonment for any who provide “unauthorized” help. The Sangya is demeaned. Political power, transport power, electric power, and now celebrative power has been siffoned away from Yangon. The current outrage originates with the SPDC, in its decades long self-serving policies that deny simple dignity to Burma’s peoples.
