Flooding had subsided in Rangoon by Friday, but several other areas around the country were feeling the effects of the annual monsoonal rains.

From Sandoway [Thandwe] on the western coast to Tavoy [Dawei] in the south, several cities and towns were pelted by torrents of rain over the past two or three days, resulting in floods.

Light rain persists today in Rangoon, Sittwe, the Irrawaddy delta, Moulmein, Pyay and Taungoo as the season’s monsoon rolls in from the west across the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Mandalay and Kachin State expect to be hit over the weekend.

Burma’s meteorology office has warned of flooding in Arakan and Chin states in the days ahead.
