Burma’s main opposition party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), on Wednesday held a massive rally in the Irrawaddy delta town of Myaungmya.

Thousands turned out, many on motorbikes and tractor carts, in this delta town, where almost every household subsists on rice cultivation and fishing.

In the 2010 election – which NLD did not contest – the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) swept the constituency of Myaungmya.

Its candidate, Tint Sann, won a Lower House seat with nearly 75,000 votes, far ahead of his nearest rival, Aung Kyin from the National Democratic Front, with 18,469 ballots. The USDP also won the Upper House and regional assembly seats that year.
