Six troops belonging to a Karen ceasefire army that were captured last week in raid by Burmese soldiers are rumoured to have been executed.
The men from the KNU/KNLA Peace Council had been manning an outpost close to Myawaddy in eastern Burma on 30 November when they came under attack. One soldier was killed by a bullet to the head, while six others were taken hostage.
General Htein Maung, head of the 2,000-strong Peace Council, said that the attack on the Hpalu outpost which the group had held for nearly three years came “out of the blue”.
“Our troops were confused and they weren’t sure whether to shoot back or not,” he said, adding that the six were captured along with their equipment. “We heard [Thursday] that all six have been executed.”
Another senior Peace Council official, The Htee, told DVB that the junta’s Military Affairs Security (MAS) office in Myawaddy had “promised to release” the six, but later reneged. When DVB contacted the office, staff there denied any knowledge of them.
A 2007 ceasefire agreement between the Peace Council, which is comprised of breakaway members of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), now appears to be in tatters.
The Peace Council has in recent weeks been fighting alongside a renegade faction of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) against the Burmese junta. Burmese troops are hunting DKBA commander Na Kham Mwe, who refused demands to transform into a junta-backed border army and is now believed to be in eastern Karen state, close to the border with Thailand.
Htein Maung described the attack on the outpost as “an insult”, saying that he signed the ceasefire agreement with the junta “simply because we didn’t want any more fighting”.
The incident comes nearly a month after heavy fighting broke out in the Myawaddy region which pushed up to 20,000 refugees into Thailand. Na Kham Mwe’s faction had taken key government positions in Myawaddy, and further south in Payathonzu, before an assault by Burmese troops forced them to withdraw.
Fighting has continued since 8 November and refugees have moved back and forth across the border, with some alleging that the Thai army had refused them sanctuary on the Thai side of the border.

Terrible news. Take care all.
Killing the POW is against the Geneva convention and it’s absolutely horrible. This will create only hatred, vengeance and another war. Come on! All the Karen, stand as a united one!
Now we all know that Burma is not on the brink of civil war, a state of civil war has existed in Burma since Thitsaphout Ney Win illegally seized power in 1962. Since the 7 of November this year 20010, the state of civil war which already existed, has intensified somewhat because of the actions of the current criminal in charge of the junta Thitsaphout Than Shwe. I for one support the actions of our brave brothers and sisters in the DKBA and KNU and all ethnic groups who stand against this traitor Than Shwe. I salute you all as heroes of Burma and as most people who watch Burma I wait for the day when you have won your freedom and have destroyed this traitor Than Shwe and every part of his evil regime.
Now Thitsaphout Than Shwe has executed these brave members of KNU/KNLA has declared war on all ethnic Armies who won’t support his illegal regime.
Crazy Htein Maung if you cannot protect your people, your ceasefire agreement is just for you. Please change your old mind. Give your power to the young generation. Be careful for yourself as well.
This is a crime! Excuting a prisoner of war is inhumane and will never be unforgiven. This is also an insult to ethnic alliance! General Htein Maung needs to consider the future of his standpoint very seriously. Either to surrender like a coward or, join the main KNU &the Federal Army, and fight back the regime.
Recently DKBA release a captured SPDC captain back to them but now Karen fighters were captured and executed by SPDC. I don’t think Karen or any ethnic arm group will execute even General Than Shwe if he is captured. This is a war between a civilized citizen and a savage ruler.
This is why I can’t believe that UDSP will lead Myanmar into the right path of democracy as they were born out of SPDC. Murdering six people at one simultaneaus time is not just a crime but a genocide.
It’s still unbelievable dealing with the thuggish without understanding “Know your enemy, know yourself”. For that, the innocent young followers have paid very high price. Painfully sorry for the 6 solders, who was captured and been killed , especially for TuTu , who was like my adopted son (if he is the one who lost one leg in 2007). It’s time for Timothy to re-read his own writing “Leaders without mirror”.
