Burma to “seriously consider” poll monitors

Burma has promised to “seriously consider” allowing election observers for April 1 by-elections in which Aung San Suu Kyi is standing, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations said today.

It said Burma President Thein Sein made the pledge to visiting ASEAN Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan during talks in the capital Naypyidaw.

“We will seriously consider having observers from ASEAN … during the April elections,” Thein Sein was quoted as saying.

The polls, which will see Suu Kyi run for a seat in parliament for the first time, are viewed as a key test of the authorities’ commitment to budding reforms.

A 2010 election which swept the army’s political allies to power was marred by widespread complaints of cheating and intimidation.

The opposition cannot threaten the ruling party’s majority even if it takes all 48 available seats in the by-elections, but a Suu Kyi win would lend legitimacy to the fledgling parliament.

Her National League for Democracy (NLD) party won a landslide victory in an election in 1990, but the then-ruling junta never allowed the party to take power.

Suu Kyi was under house arrest at the time. She was released from her latest stint in detention a few days after the 2010 vote.

The upcoming polls are being held to fill places vacated by those who have since become government and deputy ministers.

  1. Khin says:

Well, that is the least that ASEAN can do for Burmese people after watchingb them suffering for about 50m years on the side line without lifting a finger to help the so called brothers and sisters, but of course all ASEAN knows the game of the Generals very well.
Now ASEAN is trying to take credit for the Generals so called REFORM,they also know well that the Generals are not to be trusted but pray secretly that things will work out for their commercial interest once sanctions are lifted.
Do some work men, brothers and sisters.

Are people really serious about getting 46 seats (However quality ones, what quality?) in a 600 seats of so called parliament which is a paper tiger?

What is this thing about monitors and observers?? What are they monitoring?

What is at stake? WHAT IS SO BIG A DEAL???

Should there be a rule about aggrandizing every single stupid crap?

Than Shwe sold Kyauk Phyu to CHINESE along with 800 miles of land guarded by 40-50 battalions of thugs called soldiers (just in case the Burmese destroies the Chinese interest in Burmese (sorry- Chinese) soil).

(Aung San was “Bo-gyoke” with barely 5 or 6 rag-tag battalions)Is it going to change?

Thai owns Tavoy and the lad all the way back to Thailand. Is it going to change?

Indians damming rivers in Burma. Is it going to change?

What is more to come? Losing farm lands and being manual labourers in foreign-(and some usual Burmese)owned factories belching smoke and poisoning the land and would have to be grateful for it.

    Job creation!!!!

Dignity of being slave at home without the need to go to other countries. Hooray!!!

    Paradise is nigh.
