Burmese officials have said they will chair the regional ASEAN bloc in 2014 after receiving approval from Southeast Asian ministers.
Whether or not the decision has been made official remains unclear: Sit Aye, a legal advisor to President Thein Sein, was quoted this afternoon by Deutsche Presse-Agentur as saying, “As far as I’m concerned it is confirmed,” while Information Minister Kyaw Hsan said the country had received “endorsement” from ministers.
Despite widespread controversy over whether it is fit to take the chair, recent changes in Burma appear to have won plaudits from its neighbours who make up the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
The spokesperson for the opposition National League for Democracy, which will tomorrow decide whether or not to register as a party in order to compete in the up-coming by-elections, said the chairmanship could be good for the country.
“Their decision is tantamount to encouraging the present Burmese government to step up the momentum for reforms,” Nyan Win told Reuters.
“I think that Burma’s political activities will become more vibrant after assuming the chair and Burma will also become a quality member of ASEAN.”

NLD should give us more explanation and reason about how good it is to decorate killer than shwe for ASEAN chair. Do NLD want to recognize than shwe’s election(legitimacy) and 2008 Nagis constitution?. We all need NLD explanation because it is your(NLD) ethical and moral duty to all Burmese as good politician. NLD supports sanction on than shwe from US, EU. There is a double standard from NLD. We , all want to know if it is the exchange for temporary stopping of Myistone dam from than shwe or just than sein dinner or release of limited political prisoner(Zarkana) without ming ko naing and ko ko gyi?
How did thugish military regime becomming legitimate civillian government? Is it by west powerful countries make up myth? There is ongoing war with Kachin people, and the world is careless about it especially Obama administration. Is that the change Obama loudly said in his presidential campaign? Hillary Clinton will visit to Burma and support the legitimacy power of students and monks killers. What kind of people rule the world in 21st century? Where are their moral value? The change is not enough by speaking or just pretending it has changed, it has to be prove by real effort. The 2008 constitution has not changed yet. Kachin, Karen, Shan, Chin, Mon and every other ethnic people are still under oppressed and attacked because of who they are and because of they are asking for their rights. Why would the EU, the Obama administration, the UN who promote the universal human rights recognize the legal power of human rights abusers from Burma? Is economy above moral value and humanity? Aren’t these people ashamed of what they are doing? Everything is just a show. Ordinary Burmese people and ethnic people in Burma are still suffering. Their life is not improving or any less fearful. Nothing has changed!! It is still the same. One thing changed though, we can see greedy westerner after Greedy Chinese, Greedy Thai, Greedy Indian and Greedy Asean. Society can not change if the written value of the society itself is not change. How about 2008 constitution? Does it change? How about the mantality and behaviour of Burmese Army, does it change? I see more of Burmese resources will be rob and exploited. That is definately to come.
