New opposition registers for elections

A political party formed from the ashes of the famed National League for Democracy (NLD) has submitted its application to run in elections in Burma this year.

The formation of the National Democratic Force (NDF) has angered members of the now-disbanded NLD, headed by imprisoned Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who claim that the group has betrayed the principles behind the party’s boycott of the elections.

NDF spokesperson Sein Hla Oo told DVB that the party leader Thein Nyunt, accompanied by two party representatives, had travelled to the capital Naypyidaw to submit their registration with the Election Commission.

“[The application] is the first step and the next is to collect personal data of each of our members, but this is the Burmese intelligence department’s job,” he said. “They will check on each [member] and will say whether they accept [the registration] or not. We hope to learn [this week] whether or not we will be approved.”

Nyan Win, lawyer for Suu Kyi, said last week that the 64-year-old had expressed her disappointment at the new party, which includes former members of the NLD’s Central Executive Committee, including prominent spokesperson Khin Maung Swe.

But Sein Hla Oo said that the new party was formed for “the citizens who carry hopes and expectations” and for voters who had questioned who to back in the elections.

It is “also for our forces from the [NLD] who want to continue with the cause, and the progressive political comrades outside [the NLD]. We organised a wide range of people to make this group a strong opponent in the elections”, he said.

When asked about the feud between the group and the NLD, he said the new party has a policy not to criticise one other.

The sentiment was echoed by the NLD’s deputy chair, Tin Oo, who said that although he was disappointed that the NDF members didn’t follow the decision made by the majority of the NLD, he wouldn’t criticise the party because they share the same goal, despite taking different paths.

  1. Burmese People says:

U TinOo is a Myanmar Patriot, unlike that old and ignorant U WinTin, journalist. U TinOo’s position is commendable. We support all political parties who ignore the traitor woman SuuKyi.
Our position is very very clear; we will never have that traitor, usurper woman as head of executive.
Anyway, we are only at step 1 to democracy; we have more many steps to take. Most important thing at present is economic developent and job cration for our people.Nothing else.
All overseas Burmese should promote charitable activities to alleviate the sufferings of our people back at home; overseas Burmese are best advised to leave politics alone, concentrating on ‘education’, particularly history education, economic education and technological education.
    With MYITTA to all.

All in all, you are a splinter group.

    No more telling-off, Gentlemen!!!

  3. Salai Amyo says:

    Burmese People,

First of all,U r NOT(NEVER)3 the representative of all other indigenious people of Burma.

Why are you still using the word Burmese???which is being based on the idea of Burmanisation. All of your comments in DVB show that point.

All the indigenious peopls are called Burmese. Yes, that’s right. But it’s never based on a personal or a groups’s view, beliefs, stance, comments, zeal and ideas. It’s based only on the origin of race, nationality, esp. the question for which, what, where and how… of the country.

But ur using the word very smartly for your comments that ur working for all indigenious people of Burma. Pl. don’t get mad, think about yourself before u r saying & writing that do I really have other indigenious people’s supporting.

All well educated people of Burma knows that 80% of the history of Burma, were written after 1962, are incorrected.

If corrected who & what race (nationality) are these people.. Pyusawthii, Biahwih Biahtah,Anawyatha,Atawka or Asokka,Rama & Letkhana etc., and who are Pyu, Kanyan, Thet??? Where are they now??? Understand… I’m not a mouthpiece of junta,no lust of power like UU. But I have good enough experiences. I don’t want to comdemm or blame on my fellow Burma people who also were being lied as like as other our indigenious people by the junta since 1962 thru literature, culture, history, economy and religion.

I remenber my youth life in high school. We shouted the slogan that was “Takhin myo hait dout bama”( we bama are the master). It means that Bama(Burman) only is the master, not included other indigenious people on that word. The junta was trying to influence their bad and mix natures upon other indigenious people. Now u r going to step up that way by using the word “Burmese”.Understand that u r not(NEVER NEVER NEVER) the representative of my Chin people. Go and work for the junta for their happiness, and they’ll give u money and some power that u r trying to be…

Don’t forget…I have a lot of facts to prove. But I don’t want to write alots.
