The pro-junta Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has won Burma’s elections after gaining 76.5 percent of seats across the three parliaments, according to the country’s supreme election authority.

The results arrive 11 days after Burmese went to the polls for the first time in two decades, but come as little surprise: the USDP was the strongest contender by a stretch, and received the tacit support of the ruling junta, who choreographed election conditions that appeared to favour the party.

Trailing the USDP, which won 883 of the total 1,154 seats, is the National Unity Party (NUP), which came runner-up in the last polls. Also holding close ties to the ruling junta, the NUP won only 63 seats, the China-based People’s Daily quoted the Election Commission (EC) as saying.

The next four parties all fall within the ‘opposition’ bracket, despite fears before the polls that any pro-democracy candidates would be altogether sidelined. However, the total amount of seats won by these parties makes up only nine percent of the total.

They are, in order: the Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP), with 57 seats; the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party (RNDP) with 35 seats, and the National Democratic Force (NDF) and All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMRDP), each with 16 seats.

The presence of three ethnic-based parties in the top five are a symbolic victory for Burma’s long-marginalised ethnic groups, although their potential clout in a post-election will likely be very limited.

The three parliaments – the People’s Parliament, the Nationalities Parliament and the Regions and States Parliament – are set to convene within 90 days of the vote. A quarter of the seats for each had already been reserved for the military prior to the vote.

It is the winner, the USDP, which has been the target of much of the controversy that dogged the polls. A number of parties are weighing up the possibility of making a formal complaint to the EC about the USDP, but that is both expensive and dangerous, with complainants risking jail terms if unsuccessful.

Election results had already been cast in stone by Snr Gen Than Shwe since 7 steps roadmap established. That is why military regime deliberately feed election news (results) to Chinese media.

After the Chinese People Daily news announces the result of Myanmar election, it now becomes legal announcement because Naypyidaw have no right to announce their landslide victory in recent election.

USDP is created by SPDC and loaded with tricks, cheats, crimes and lies imported from China. General Than Shwe is the biggest slave Myanmar ever spawned in it own soil for foreign colonialists; Britist, Japan and China.

  5. Sai Lin says:

I don’t care about that Election result because I don’t recognized 2010 Election as free and fair. Junta is Junta whatever they try to change the name by fake Election. The revolution must go on until true democracy was awarded into Burmese peoples’ hands. Daw Su will fight democracy for Burmese peoples inside country. We need to continue fight Junta from outside country and inside country. We Burmese must be united as one force. It doesn’t matter which ethnic background you belong. You were born in this land and you belong to this land so you’re Burmese anyway. We will win one day if we have unbreakable spirit and united. I’m very proud of our brothers, sisters, uncle, aunties, grand fathers and grand mothers who bravely against Junta inside Burma even though their lives in danger.

  6. Denys Goldthorpe says:

Well it was to be expected that Thitsaphout Than Shwe would win this illegal election; he won 76.5 percent of nothing. The 3 parliaments’ they have allegedly won seats across are just the 3 level of rule two allow the continuation of the internal terror committed on the Burmese people by Than Shwe’s illegal and mindless puppet government.
The world must now act in a military sense and destroy Than Shwe and his murdering thugs. The people of Burma deserve a lot better than what this murdering regime have given them for so long. Operation Free Burma must now come into effect.

  7. newgenaration says:

is it regime are just changing the flag only or the are trying change more.whatever we have hard is from chinese media and the chinese hail the result and aginst the the burmese nationality to praise the regime.i don’t think chinese will get friendship with the burma in the long run.there is not only the regime but also it’s minority and who love democracy.when we get togather then you will be thrown away by the power of the nation.don’t only get the advantage but frienshio also important.

  8. Thaw Reh says:

Why we talking too much about “election”… it is not election; it is selection.

I don’t care about this selection’s result. Let put our struggle go on… to make our land into a place for every one (happy to to live).

  10. Nyunt Shwe says:

I wish dvb takes the chore of reporting the winners in numbers with party affiliations for the People’s Parliament since it is the most important parliament in the government structure. The report will makes how much the gap of ruling party and its oppositions. This power balance reflect how flaw the recent election and the birth of unhealthy parliament in Myanmar.
