Burma’s prime minister, who earlier this week quit his military post, has applied to form a new party ahead of controversial elections this year.

“Prime minister Thein Sein will lead the Union Solidarity and Development Party,” a government official told AFP on condition of anonymity. Some other ministers are also involved in the party, including agriculture minister Htay Oo and industry minister Aung Thaung, the official said.

He stepped down from his military post on Monday, state media reported, along with 22 other senior ministers. Analysts predicted then that the move would pre-empt the formation of a party to contest Burma’s first elections in 20 years.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) sounds eerily similar to the government proxy organisation, the Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA), which had been billed to play a leading role in Burmese politics following the elections.

The USDP is reported to have 27 members in total, with Thein Sein at the helm. The spokesperson for the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) party, Nyan Win, said that it was unclear whether the new party was a spin-off of the USDA.

He added that the appointment of Thein Sein as the party head was in “clear violation of the Political Parties Registration Law which states that civil servants cannot take part in political parties”.

“The prime minister position is the highest ranking civil servant. If the party leader U Thein Sein is really the prime minister Thein Sein, then this is against the law.”

The New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported that 25 organisations have applied to form political parties over the past month. So far 12 of those have been cleared to campaign, while the rest are being scrutinised, the paper said.

Critics charge that the elections will lack credibility because of laws that effectively bar opposition leader and democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi from taking part. The NLD announced last month that it would be boycotting the polls, meaning that the incumbent will face little strong opposition.

It is obvious now. Thein Sein will become president of Burma after election. The problem is we do not know when election will happen. The President of new Burma has already been announced. The soothsayers and Than Shwe are still busy looking at the sky to calculate the faith of Than Shwe`s well-being and good karma. After killing monks and damaging Buddhism, His faith is not certain. We need to wait for election date up to last minute. It could be postponed indefinitely if his karma is wondering.

Overall, it is a bit improvement for Burmaese political circle for Thein Sein to run for office. Civillian means civillian, stepping dowon from junta seat to civillian is a big risk for the junta group because the people of Burma are likely to speak up more civillian to civillian. Go Burma!

  5. Denys Goldthorpe says:

It’s apparent that this criminal Thein Sein will be the Illegal president of Burma, and it’s apparent that Thitsaphout Than Shwe will be the puppet master while Thein Sein will be the puppet. The crimes of murder rape torture and enforced slavery against the Burmese people must never go unanswered. Thitsaphout Than Shwe and all his collaborators in crime including Thitsaphout Thein Sein must stand trial for crimes against humanity.

  6. koko says:

of all the stupid dogs, Thein Sein lookes the dumbest.

According to any religion nobody can reach with sins.He or She who can reach good faith with best and honest living in human life only can reach heaven. How Than Shwe and Gangs(all generals)can reach heaven? They do all worst things in their lives for Than Shwe(I can’t find even an animal stupid like him and his gangs)for their sakes. They all go fifth hell with their sins.

  10. maung says:

Only solution to solve all this is arm to arm. We will need a strong and honest leader to start the second indepedent struggle for all Burmese people.

  11. Obama!! No, Please says:

    Dear All,

There is only one core point to solve problems because that core point caused all of problems. Myanmar is starting statehood as parliament democracy, fail. Then Socialist, fail, then Junta, more worse. There is still arm conflict in Myanmar, have they solve problem? Myanmar fought independence from British by force, but Gandhi walked different path. History tell you which way is more effective.
Burma get independence but rule by people who believe in arm rather than people. India took freedom by people power rule by people until now.
There is setback in every arm conflict, nowaday Myanmar need a century time to build to follow neighbours.
In my opinion main problem is social system of Myanmar and wrong interpretation of religion. Fight the main enemy, may be people attitude is the problem as well.

  12. Obama!! No, Please says:

    1. Did general walk correct way? No.
    2. Buddish monk, not really.
    3. How about civil servant? Are you joking they are following Law or not asking bribe?
    4. Civilians? They also not fixed in principal as you can see government can easily stimulate them to become puppet by just giving opportunities.
    5. Politician? Where is NLD LA? what are they doing? NLD CEC? Who are they?
So, what is problem in Myanmar? Pot call Kattle Black.

  13. Please help yourself says:

Every success story based on burning desire, good plan, faith in destination, persistant action towards goal.
You can wish whatever you want but you cannot meet with aboved requirements , still has to hit the wall.
Good or evil, success or fail interpret by same natural Law.
