The chairman of the Union Democratic Party (UDP) in Burma has quit his post in protest at lack of reform of pre-election conditions.

Phyo Min Thein sent a letter to party colleagues yesterday announcing his resignation and lamenting the fact that increasingly repressive election laws were being rolled out by the Burmese government.

He told DVB that “we tried our best within the capacity of the Union Democracy Party” but that little more could be done unless the wider circumstances change. There is “no chance the elections and its results will be free and fair”, he added.

“The regulations are extremely strict. I don’t plan to continue under circumstances where we can only follow [the government's] plan,” he said. “This is why I am stopping. I have decided to quit from my position as the chairman and my responsibilities as well as my involvement in this political environment.”

He added that the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) led by Burma’s prime minister, Thein Sein, was blocking the chances of smaller parties. The USDP is widely tipped to win the elections, and has a number of current government ministers within its ranks.

Rumours are circulating that Burma’s forestry minister, Thein Aung, will stand in the elections as a candidate in Irrawaddy division’s Ingapu. It is not clear which party he will join, but it is the USDP that appears to be accomodating most government ministers, including foreign minister Nyan Win.

Thein Tin Aung, general secretary of the UDP, said however that the party will continue to the end despite Phyo Min Thein’s resignation.

“We are not arguing that the restrictions [Phyo Min Thein] mentioned are not true – those facts are correct. But this is not the time to decide to withdraw from the elections,” said  Thein Tin Aung. “We will keep on striving for free and fair elections and to represent the people until the voters are given freedom of choice and the right to vote freely.”

He added however that the party will try to survive to restrictive laws, but if it transpired that “people cannot cast votes freely, then we might also have to withdraw from the elections”.

Phyo Min Thein spent 15 years in prison after his arrest in 1990. He had been active in the 1988 uprising and was appointed secretary of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU) the in lower-Burma regions in 1990, before being sent to prison.

The UDP was founded earlier this year and quickly became one of the more vocal parties campaigning for Burma’s first elections in two decades later this year.

Out of the 49 parties that have registered for elections, 40 have so far been approved by the Election Commission.

U Phyo Min Thein’s opinion is absolutely true “no chance the elections and its results will be free and fair”.Aung Myo Min mentioned SG Than Shwe’s wicked plan.
Unitede Nation should stop any military cope. All peoples incliding military persons want democracy, human-rights & justice. Burmese army is not for SG Than Shwe & his followers. Who is hero as General/President Ramos in Burma? All army officers & soldiers want leader General as Ramos.

U Phyo Min Thein {The chairman of the Union Democratic Party (UDP)}is very outstanding and qualified polotician as well as good leader for Burma Democracy as 8888 generation. He is really wise and faithful leader for democratic movement.Aung Myo Min mentioned SG. Than Shwe’s wicked plan. No general can say like this without Than Shwe’ commaqnd. All poeples including military officers & soldiers want democracy, human rights & justice. They look for brave & good leader like General/President Ramos to stand for the peoples who love democracy.

We must look practical and true nature of our country situating, in such situation we must take every available chance and move forward. I think democracy wanted by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and many other similar leaders is too good for our country’s present situation if I can choose between different democracy I would choose Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s one but for now I see no way of getting such democracy right away and we will face very dangerous situation if something went wrong with such democracy. I an very very proud of DASSK and many other whose freedom is lost for many years for trying to bring very very good democracy system to our our country, and I hope they will success in the near future, for now let us move forward by choosing the democracy that is a few months away from us.

There is no chance that these so called and very illegal elections will be free or fair, I can understand how frustrated Phyo Min Thein must have felt with the hope of change in Burma. A military invasion is the only way that will happen; this outrage perpetrated on the Burmese people will never be changed whilst Thitsaphout Than Shwe or his criminal partner’s will be around. The murder’s rapes and tortures will never stop, Than Shwe evil regime must be destroyed.

  5. Myo says:

I think it is just a trick to pressure the government and to get international attention. He may be still behind his party.Even if all the parties leave and USDP alone exist, junta will surely make their election.

I like to point out to those who wrongly felt that democracy will come slowly by grabbing the dirty hands of Than Shwe`s set-up election. The suggestion of taking any chance given by military and go from there would be dream in the space of nowhere. I read in Phyo Min Thein`s interview in Irrawaddy. He mentioned utterance by Dep Education Minister of Burma military which said ” Military will stage a coup d’etat if it does not win the set-up election”. With mother of lies, tricks and dirts, and if they still not get the result they want, they are ready to mess this election, crush the election result with military boot and grab the power as if nothing had happened before. Is that clear explanation? I can give another tips to understand the cruelty of Than Shwe, the mad cow. Cheers.
