Burma’s parliament has agreed to ratify the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) after a message from President Thein Sein on the matter, according to state media. The convention has 190 state parties, representing over 98 percent of the world’s population. Two countries have signed but not yet ratified the treaty — Burma and Israel —while four nations have not acceded: Angola, North Korea, Egypt and South Sudan. The CWC prohibits the development, production, acquisition, stockpiling, retention, transfer or use of chemical weapons.
