Forty-three demonstrators who embarked on a 1,000 km march from Rangoon to the site of the Myitsone dam in northern Burma’s Kachin State arrived on Saturday after nearly two months on the road. The group, organised by the Former Political Prisoners Society, aimed to raise awareness while demanding permanent suspension of the Myitsone dam, which was halted by President Thein Sein in 2011. Though more than 100 people began the trek on 28 March, less than half completed the journey. Those who did were welcomed by locals at the confluence of the Irrawaddy River.
