When I visited the makeshift camps for Rohingya refugees on the Bangladesh-Burma border, I made up my mind there and then that I would not rest until their plight received the attention it needs and deserves.
In all my travels to places of poverty, conflict and oppression, I don’t think I have seen human misery on such a scale. It was wet season and the rain seeped through the ground and dripped through the roof of every shack. Children were malnourished, some chronically, and the sick were dying with no access to medical care. Teenagers were teaching younger kids, because there was no schooling available. They told me that they themselves should still be in education, but there were no opportunities for them and so they shared their limited knowledge with those younger than them.
Fear and despair haunted the eyes of most people I met, as they told me that they were a people “at the brink of extinction”. Despite having lived in northern Arakan state, Burma, for generations, they said that Burma’s regime does not regard them as citizens. “The Burmese tell us ‘you are Bengali, go back to Bangladesh’. The Bangladeshis tell us, ‘you are Burmese, go back to Burma’. We are trapped between a crocodile and a snake.”
For pure humanitarian reasons, I believe it is not only morally right, but imperative, to speak up for the beleaguered Rohingya. Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) ranks them among the ten people groups around the world most at risk of extinction. They are in urgent need of humanitarian help and advocacy.
However, I believe it is also in our interests to help the Rohingya. It is in the interests of all the people of Burma to include and involve and welcome the Rohingya as full and equal citizens and as allies in the democracy movement. Burma cannot be a true democracy, respectful of human rights, if when the time comes for freedom, the Rohingya continue to be denied citizenship, marginalised, oppressed and alienated. Freedom for Burma must mean freedom for all its people. Human rights are universal if they are to mean anything.
As a Christian, I believe first and foremost that my faith teaches me to speak out for the oppressed, of whatever religious or racial background. My compassion can never be restricted to helping fellow Christians. However, there are occasions when my fellow Christians, among the Chin, Kachin, Karen and Karenni for example, need help. I documented their plight in my report Carrying the Cross: The military regime’s campaign of restriction, discrimination and persecution against Christians in Burma. When it was published, my Rohingya friends issued a statement endorsing the report, and spoke at the launch event. They, the Muslim Rohingyas, stood in solidarity with the Christian Chin, Kachin, Karen and Karenni. In an age of extremism, religious intolerance and religiously-motivated conflict around the world, that spirit of solidarity is a powerful inspiration. They were there when my fellow Christians needed a voice; it is right, therefore, that I should be there for them. Religious freedom is indivisible – if one group wants the right to practice their faith peacefully, they must champion that right for all.
I once asked a Rohingya friend whether there was a risk of the Rohingya Muslims being radicalised. With a book of Martin Luther King’s speeches in his hands, he nodded gravely. Yes, he said. “If our people continue to be persecuted by the regime, sidelined by the democracy movement and ignored by the rest of the world, and if radical Islamists come and offer help, there is a risk that our people will be influenced by that and turn to extremism.” That, surely, is reason enough to reach out to the Rohingya, for the last thing Burma needs right now, on top of all its other woes, is rising militant Islamism.
So for all these reasons, primarily the humanitarian need, I have been working for the Rohingya. I produced a report on my visit to the Bangladesh-Burma border, I have arranged briefings for Members of Parliament, and drafted parliamentary questions to raise the plight of the Rohingya in parliament. In November 2008, I took three Rohingya to Brussels, to brief members of the European Parliament, Commission and Council. And earlier this month, Maung Tun Khin, President of the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK), and I, travelled to Washington DC.
In Washington DC we spoke at a briefing in the US congress, met officials in the state department, and talked with staff of various senators and congressmen. We had half an hour with congressman Joseph Pitts, and – most significantly – an hour and a half with congressman Chris Smith. These two men are both committed Christians, and champions of human rights and religious freedom. Both were unaware of the plight of the Rohingyas, but when they heard about the grinding, dehumanising treatment they face at the hands of the regime – restrictions on movement, marriage, access to education, and freedom of religion – they were deeply moved.
Congressman Smith is tabling the first ever resolution focused on the Rohingya in the US congress as a result. The resolution urges the junta to restore the Rohingya citizenship status, calls for the US government to provide assistance, and recommends the establishment of a UN commission of inquiry to investigate crimes against humanity, including in northern Arakan.
People have commented on the inter-faith collaboration shown by Christian Solidarity Worldwide and the Rohingya working together. Personally, I long for a day when such collaboration is unremarkable. In an era of religious extremism and intolerance, those of us who are motivated by our faith tradition to be voices of freedom, peace and human rights should work together. In Burma, that is particularly needed.
Division, whether on religious, ethnic or political lines, has hindered the struggle. Burmans, Arakanese and others need to recognise that their enemy is not the Rohingya, and that in fact with the Rohingya together they have a common enemy: the regime. One Rohingya leader told me that his vision is for Burma to be a beautiful garden, in which different flowers with different colours grow side by side in the same soil – individual, distinct, unique, but united. So I urge every Christian and every Buddhist to speak out for all the people of Burma, including the Rohingya, who desperately need a voice.

Thank you very much u published Rohingya news on ur website. So it is proof you are fighting against the rights. It is really helpful for our community. We don
How could I show what I’m feeling now just after reading this report.
I’m deeply shocked & regretted about this Rohingya community. This community is gradually falling into earthly hell because of Burmese junta.
Rohingyas’ HUMAN-RIGHTS are buried !! No-ONE said effectively said about it.
Int’l powerful bodies should come forward. Local Bangladeshi authorities should also play a vital role for this community’s survival. Unfortunately, some local gangs-leaders have been organizing anti-Rohingya campaigns as they were fetched great amount of bribe from Burma’s intelligences etc. SORRY!!!
Rohingyas are also Human being, belong to this EARTH. Rohingyas are not ALIEN that Stephen Hawking recently said about. !!
Thanks to Hon’ble author as well as DVB for publishing this news.
Thanks to Benedict for bringing up the plight of beautiful Rohingya at the hands of brutal military regime of Burma. I am a Buddhist decent and believer in multicoloured, multiracial, mutual respected society. Everyone of us have unknown quality of gift to build the beautiful multiracial society in Burma. Forget about discrimination against the colour, race, religion, age and disability. The more races I see in the groups, the merrier we are.Time to support the oppressed Rohingya to gain the rightful place in their place of Birth, Burma is long overdue. Lets all united to call for basic human right for our fellow human beings, Rohingya.
After reading this report, my tears are falling within my heart as I can’t show tears in front of my children who were grown up in London. Even though I am living in London for ten years I still scare of dog barking as we grown up in the area where almost every night visited by military or police for harassment and arrest in Rohingyas areas. Human right violation on Rohingyas were fallen in dark in the past. At last we have got someone to speak out for Rohingyas, to help rohingyas by exposing human right violation they are facing under the regime, helping to Lobby Rohingyas issues around the world. Rohingyas Plight are un-describable. Their situation is like a Volcanic ashes coming out in Iceland recently. Thanks to the publisher and author of this article.
I really appreciate that you took so much time to acquaint ROHINGYA matter. I feel I could learn a great deal from you .
Thank you Mr.BENEDICT ROGERS.
Thank you DVB.
There must be justice for the Rohingya people and all the peoples of Burma, every crime that Thitsaphout Than Shwe and his evil regime must be answered.
Than Shwe is directly responsible for every act of cruelty against the Burmese people, whenever a soldier is killed from any of the ethnic armies fighting Than Shwe’s evil regime then Than Shwe’s is responsible, any time a Burmese soldier is killed fighting the ethnic armies Than Shwe is directly responsible. Anytime somebody is tortured raped or murdered by Than Shwe’s evil regime then Than Shwe is directly responsible.
I completely disagree with Benedict Rogers. There is no ethnic group named Rohingya in Myanmar or Bangladesh. So called Rohingyas are nothing but Bengali Muslim Infiltrators (BMI) fron Bangladesh. They were brought into Burma by British colonial rule. After the British left in 1948, the BMIs aka Rohingyas are refusing to go back to Bangladesh. They concocted an identity Rohingya Muslim to hoodwink the civilized world. They were able to hoodwink the westerners, but they failed to hoodwink the Burmans and Rakhines. Bangladesh must accept its own people and stop using the poor BMIs as canon fodders to expand Islamic domain.
Bunch of border crossers from the other side. Nothing new for me. I have seen everything what goes on at the border. If we don’t open up our eyes, we will find ourselves engulfed by them.
Just to give feedback ‘Andrew Chakma’ probably Rakhine origin for his comment about their is no such name Rohingya.
We all need to remember that their are no such name that are fallen from the sky or born from somebody. All the ethnic, language name, race, religious , country and etc., name are given by people accordingly. If their is no such Rohingya ethnic name exist then their are no Burmans or Rakhines exist as well. Also need to remember that Scientific proof or history proof are also derive from human being.I humble request to mr Andrew to study not old history but modern history before giving such comment like above.
Yes,Acoording to Roger suggestion It is time a voice for Rohingya
from all and every citizenship of Buram who loved democray, human right, freedom of religious, equality, justic. It is one of psychological problems in society which will lead islamic militant in the regime then will side effect the world region,Because of separatism is one of signal for aggresssive and frustrated in society which can create more a movement. In actaul the History of Rohingya is a witness which nobody can hide it.History is history, maybe today military regime temporary keep its history aside but time will decide its history. And according to my ideology of human basic principle, we all human are created equally,so for no single differences of such as races, religious, colours, geopolitic regions, places and location should not reason to distinguished Rohingya minority ethenic. The oppression of Rohingya is one of light which guiding us how much human right are ignored in Burma, how military regime is trying to divde all ethenic majority or minority.Military regime is systematically adopting a policy of isolation among the all races and all leaders or groups or parties to be weaken step by step.22 yeras why they seized power and took times to arrange election 2010.All People of Burma are not un-educated.Today is not 1988, world is like a villages, information are easily can access.Let us wake up all people who are suffering in Burma,Time is welcoming you all.Give a voice for justic,Rohingya are your brither and sister, like other minority.Justic and fair will be a witness a day.I am strongly belived that Rohingya are become target, as a part of military regime’s rule and division of policy to all Ethenic minority or majority and including all parties.
Now it is right times to stand on &
Let us awreness about Military regime policy.
We are glad to know there are people who really understand the truth:ANDREW CHAKMA is absolutely correct. There are more materials about this issue.Poeple who are blinkered and blinded by their hatred for the military junta are missing the point. This mindset, sadly, include some Burmese people.Yes, there were many wrong doing by the military in the past. Our problem is ignornace. So far nearly 50, yes 50, political parties have registered for the elections. Can anyone tell us which other countries in the world have so many political parties? We are undertaking serious research.
It is very heartly thank to Roger who gave a voice to all who are looking real justic and human rights ,democracy in Burma.God bless you and you whole team who are supporting you.Justic should equal to all human,it is universal. We keep in mind that first we are human beign.
I am absolutely agree with Roger’s report about Rohingya issue. And God bless him and his followers, who are non profits fighting for social justic for Burma and around world.God will help him.Ladies and gentelman you all have to notice,,,
Why military regime are start suppression Rohingya?,Why they are one side disagree Rohingya are as a ethenic, and start oppression since when General Nay win coup power. But in real Why after independent Rohingya are accpeted as Minority By PHASAPALA govt.History are history, anyone can study easily, natioanlly or internatioanlly.Politic are no stable and naturally idelogies are changing, today world change we need.Yes i agree democracy mean we have right view of differences opinion on Rohingya issue but it is not singal issue of politic that anyone easily can expressed Rohingya are not in a list of Ethenic minority and they were come from Bangladesh.Because Rohingya are not a group of people, they are millions of people and they are elected memebr of parliment before and they are 1990 election’s elected MP,So i personally like to request all reader who are interested to show their comment. The Rohingya people are not come from sky and they lived together with all other races, specially Rakhine peacefully in Arakan state and other areas in Burma and over so many centuries ago and till today. Therefore We noone can’t ignored history as layman talking without logically. Before we gave any unacceptable anti-Rohingya statement,he or she shold need Strong research report of datas acquired which should be based on systematically analysis, reliabity and validty.Time will decide who are Rohingya.A natioanl identity and its characteristics(including language, culture, religious) are standing as a evidence of Rohingya are as a minority ethenic who are living over centure of that land and around world.
Thanks Ben.You are one of the wonderful humanbeings on Earth.’May God Bless You”
The abuses against Rohingya are like ice-berg. What we can see or we are seeing is just a very small portion or small peice only.
I,as a Rohingya who was born and grown up in Northern Arakan, still usually dream Burmese Army who are following me to arrest as a force labour. It is absolutely life-long nightmare for me.
Rohingya are not alone anymore. They are not friendless. They live in Global village with other six thousands millions humanbeings.
Rohingya’s voice are strong enough to raise and their hands are long enough to reach to the destination.
Lets wipe out our tears which is enough. We have cried a lot, whihc is either not recognized or not sympathized by the brutal regime and his supporters.
So lets put our hands together, and march forward to eradicate all kinds of oppressions and human rights abuses from every corner of the world including most effected people Rohingya.
Forget what we are, just consider who we are. We are humanbeings, we all of us have responsibility to help humanbeings.
Soon after British left in 1948, former East Pakistani government sponsored thousands of landless Bengali Muslims to infiltrate into Arakan state of Burma. Their aim was to make Arakan a Muslim dominated state. In 1962 Ne Win prudently declared the BMIs aka Rohingyas as illegal infiltrators.
The BMIs aka Rohingyas are not only a threat to Burma, they are a threat to the whole civilized world. They are involved in rape, robbery and various kinds of crime against the indigenous Rakhine and Burman people. They are invovled in terrorism against the western forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are extremely intolerant to any religion other than Islam. They justify lying, robbing and murdering non-Muslims. It’s very unwise and naive for Benedict Rogers to speak and act for these people.
By the way, I am not a Rakhine. I belong to the Chakma people of Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh. I speak a language very similar to the dialect spoken by the so called Rohingyas or Chittagonians.
Thank you, Andrew Chakma, for speaking the truth. We know about Benedict Roger, who is a religious colonialist. He and Caroline Cox had been trying to gang up on the Burmese regime using Christianity;basically, to galvanise all Christians against the regime pretending to be on the side of the Burmese. We including our ethnic brehtrens are predominantly Buddhist. What is happening is that because the state of Burma is so weak and the people dislike the regime, the Christians are enlarging their dominance.Sadly, our own people are so naive, all they can see is hatred of the regime without understanding the consequences.Rogers is forming an alliance with the Rohinga to attact the Burmese Buddhists; he is so sly, he pretends to defend the Buddhists. No so. His primary motive is increasing the number of Christians in Burma. Many Europeans are sick of such cunning ways of brainwashing. Those who agree with him are naive. Why should he or anyone want to convert Buddhists to Christianity of Islam. Think about it.
Yes, The rohingyas are a threat to the whole world in the long run. They don’t look Burmese and they have no loyalty to the state and society of Burma. Our so-called political activists have been so blind; blinded by their hatred for the junta.
The name Chittagong is actually a corrupt version of the original Burmese name ‘Cittagaung’,meaning war bridgehead.
When the tobacco companies realise that their sales are declining in the Western world, they expand their markets into the third world.
Likewise, when the Christian churches are experienceing ever falling numbers of church goers, they try to expand the number in the third world. Burma is one of the softest targets because the Buddhists are so passive.
Majority of those who posted messages supporting Rogers fail to understand that he is setting the Muslims against the Buddhists. In England, most people used to think of Buddhism as stupid and ridiculous; but anymore. People in the West have become very educated about Buddhism and many are no longer Christians and many admire Buddhism for the philosophy and its practical application to life.
Rogers is trying to expand religious colonialism – christianity – under cover of so-called human right and more importantly, under cover of Burmese peoples’ hatred for the regime.Sadly, our people do not understand the ulterior motives of Rogers.
With tne enlargement of christianity and islam, Burma faces a divided loyalities. Now it the time for the Buddhists to wake up and stop the tide of Christian colonialism. That woman SuuKyi has no idea what is going on and about the dangers Burma is facing.
Thanks Roger and thanks DVB. There are many other nightmares in the life of Rohingyas both inside and outside Burma. Nobody can control falling tears if someone pay a visit to the makeshift camp in Bangladesh, it is my challenge. Also life at a glance in Arakan too as whenever the brutal force come and killed or arrest or loot or rape somebody.
Despite them, Andrew Chakma, another minority from Bangladesh appeared with sensitive mind over the issue, why?
Does Chakma forgot about Md. Hanif, a Muslim army general who conquered their queen Quiya Puri then married her in Arakan. The two Mayu mountain peaks are still well-known by their names inside the region.
Chakma said Rohingyas are Bengali Muslim Infiltrators (BMI)and brought them into Burma during British Era.Mr. Chakma…do you know Arakan was survived from Burman by the the Muslim soldiers forces from Bengal since 1426 AD? Where are they and their descents if millions are infiltrators?
The next xenophobia is so-called Burmese People. He wrote as of the support to Mr Chakma as Rohingyas are threatening to the Burma. the world is witnessing today for who is threatening to whom for centuries. DO you know Mr. Burmese people that Arakan was never been a part of Burma before 1784? You are the invader of our motherland. Now think about you as who gives troubles to whom.
Now you see the divided loyalty already. Ko KO Lin is a real traitor. It seems he is a Muslim, not Burmese, with a Burmese name. He is looking at history selectively.
He said Arkan was never been part of a Burma before 1764? Arkan? Who called it Arkan? It is Yakhine! Arkan is the name given by the coloniser English.
TWO ISSUES!
1.Will the French accept that because an English king seized northern part of France, Brittany, it must now be part of Englnad? So, if Yakhine was not part of Burma, what was it as an ‘INDEPENDENT STATE’? US took over Hawaiii. Why not traitor Ko Ko Linn fight US for Hawaii independence? And about native Americans (formerly known as Red Indians)?
2. There are many distorted versions of Burmese history by treasonous Burmese exiles and some English neocolonialists. What Ko KO Linn is in denial about is that the national boundaries of the countries of Europe and of those in Africa are all modern. He does not know nothing about ‘Scramble for Africa and Berlin Congress.
NOW THE REAL BUMESE HISTORY
Burma began at Tagaung. It is an historical fact, even Thai historians understand.
A prince of the Buddha line had lost the struggle for the throne to his brother. That was 3,000 years ago;500 years before the Buddha. The religion at that time was Hinduism. Tbe prince from Kapilavastu (search it on the internet)head east towards Burma. At Tagaung, there was a community already. The prince installed a system of government – a monarchy – under the Brahmanic philosophy of kingship. Hence, Burma was orginally called Brahma, (land of God or creation) For several centuries the dynasty lasted. Later, it branched out: ONE went to Yakhine! That was baout 2600 years ago. However, there were people in that region, who were not at all of Indian races. They were Mongoloids; even today, in northern part of Bangladesh (former East Pakistan)the people are similar to Burmese)ANOTHER BRANCH went south to lower Burma and founded TheYayKitTaYa (Sri Kistra) and yet another branch settled in the area around HALIN, that is near SHWEBO.
Ko Ko Linn is IGNORANT of real Burmese history.
Burma as a monarchical state began at Taguang 3000 years ago; hence, the saying ‘Bamar Asa Tagaung Ka’, meaning Burma began at Tagaung.
The first Burmese empire began to develop in the 9th century.
Going back to the periods since the Prince founded the very first Burmese Kingdon, Brahma at Tagaung, there came many settlers from north-east and north-west;from the north-east came the people who shared the ethnicity of the Yunanese (not Chinese – at that time there was neither China or India as they are today.)In the Chinese language Burma was and still is known as Mien Tien (it has a very positive connotation -one meaning is Heaven’s Gate). The new settlers pronounced Brahma Mranmar. From Brahma was derived Bamar. When the English came to Burma they called it first Burmah (not Burma);later the letter h was dropped. So all Burma is actually Bamar, not to be confused with the majority ethnic group called Bamar todsy. Even the Kayins and Kachins are Bamars!
From Mranmar wss derived Myanmar. So, both Bamar and Myanmar are from the same root ‘Brahma’. As the Burmese or Bamars were denied the knowledge of their own history under the English rule 1886-1948, Burmese people became very ignorant and they thought that Burma was called Bamar because Bamar means ‘strong’; later they interpreted Myanmar as ‘quick or witty’ Both interpretations are WRONG. They only proves that Burmese people have been denied their own ‘CLASSICAL’ education.
England is not called English because English people ‘inglated’. It was Albion!
Now going back to Yakhine, Rohingas have absolutely no right to be in Burma or to be Burmese given the historical truth. it seems Ko Ko Lay’s mtoher has marrried a descendant of an immigrant from Bengal.
Rohingas are ‘Kalars’. The word Kalar is derived from ‘Koolar’; ‘koo’ means swim. koolar means one who came swimming.Hence all those who came from across the water are called ‘Kalar’; the English are known as ‘kalarphyu’, meaning ‘white kalar’.
ISLAM arose in the 7the century, nearly 1,300 years after Buddhism. Ancient Burmese were hindus or animists;first state religion of Burma was Buddhism. In fact Buddhism arrived in Burma more than 2000 years ago through Thaton, a Mon kingdom, that was conquered by the so-called Bamars led by Anawayetta. Yet,there were complex relationships between the kings of Burma, through marriage or conquest.
TO THINK THAT BURMA IS A UNION OF DISPERATE STATES IS THE HEIGHT OF IGNORANCE AT BEST AND OF TREASON AT WORST. Burma is a unitary state; it has been like that for centuries. Just look at the maps of the Burmaese empires.
We WERE GREAT! We will be great again.
Returning to Yakhine, remember it was and still is a Buddhist land, that was integrated later into ONE Burma.
For goodness sake the likes of Ko KoLinn should study history seriously; not only Burmese history but also Europen history. English was 6 small kingdoms. Scotland was separate. Wales was separate. Ireland composed a number of small kingdoms. Burma achieved the status of ‘unitary kingdom’ centuries before. Germany was some 200 principalities. Italy was several principalities.
STOP BEING traitors to Burma. Even the term Union of Burma is WRONG!It is simply BURMA!The word ‘union’ implies artificial association and meant to usher in balkanisation. Our Burmese people, majority, have not been educated properly for a very very long time. We are determined to rectify the situation!
In conclusion, ti must be said that the likes of Ko Ko Linn taking the side of Rohingas, if they are of Burmese origin, they must be charged with treason; anyone who promotes disintegration of Burma, with oir without the aid of alens, is a traitor. That woman called SuuKyi, so ignorant and so lustful for power, is a traitor!
WE BURMESE WILL UNITE AND FIGHT ALL ENEMIES WITHIN AND WITHOUT.
Join us. Be loyal to all Burma. Let’s rebuild Burma as a democratic country step by step.
BANGLADESH must loomk after their own people, Rohingas. It is their responsibility. On humantarian ground Burma can give aid to Bangladesh to help resettle the Rohingas where they belong.
We can trace back our recorded history for more than a thousand year. There was never a Chakma queen or princess who married a Muslim general. Here again a lie and fabrication just like their Rohingya Muslim identity.
During the 2nd world war the BMIs aka Rohingyas sided with the colonial British. The British armed them to guard the bridges and roads against the Japanese forces in northern Arakan. Once the Japanese were driven out of Arakan, the BMIs went on rampage against the indigenous Rakhine population. They raped, robbed and drove out the indigenous Rakhine population from Maungdaw and Buthidaung. They destroyed many Buddhist temples and built mosques in those places. Their reign of terror ended only when the British left in 1948. However the damage to the Rakhine culture and population was already done.
A word of advice to Benedic Rogers. Enemy’s enemy does not necessarily make a friend. Once US thought Bin Laden was a friend. Look at her now, Bin Laden is the worst enemy.
Why can’t a new political party be created with the views of Suu Kyi and have a go at winning the elections? I know the Junta want to still control the country but is this idea possible?
@Burmese people
I think you need to chill out, there are many Burmese people in other countries, would you suggest that they should not be able to gain citizenship in the nation that they reside in???
Most Burmese people came from the North West some came over the sea from the west some came over land, get over it, look beyond colour and religion or please go and exile yourself with Ne Win in some fascist circle jerk
Thank You Ben for your recent work on behalf of the Royhinga refugees.
The fact that you place their suffering high on your list of the places you have visited during your travels says a lot.
Their situation must truly be grim.
When I see certain individuals take it upon themselves to split historical hairs in order to downplay the importance of helping those who are suffering such unimaginable hardship and persecution, I am reminded of the same treatment of the ethnic peoples of eastern Burma which you discussed and brought to the light of day in your book, “A Land Without Evil”.
We must all remember that in many parts of Asia, students are taught history which has been carefully re-written by State historians.
Therefore, I am never surprised to see individuals regurgitate the programming they had rammed down their throats, which they often fall-back on in order to find ways to substantiate their perceived ethnic superiority.
This is also often the impetus for those who do not suffer ethnic or religious persecution to become defensive when it becomes apparent that one of the greatest contributing factors to the ongoing suffering of their fellow citizens turns out to be their own apathy.
When I see them resort to attacking Christianity as part of their rhetoric, it becomes quite easy to classify their comments as simple ignorance.
Fact: Christian missionary and humanitarian groups from around the world are leading the efforts to provide for the needs of impoverished and persecuted people around the world.
When a team of Christian doctors turns up in a deep Burmese jungle hide site where starvation and disease are rampant, it is not because they came to convert everyone to Christianity.
No one will be asked to convert to Christianity before receiving medicine, before having a wound dressed, or a tooth pulled.
No one will be checking anyone’s religion prior to giving them a blanket, or a pair of eyeglasses, or a shirt.
But if the refugee asks “why have you come here?”, the Christian can easily say with a smile, “Because Jesus sent me here to help you”.
The fact that “Burmese People” aka “Myanmar Patriot4 UMPF”, is here ranting and shrieking his inane historical stylings (from the lap of democracy in Great Britain) is a good indication that your article has struck a nerve leading to the truth, which he will seek to bury with multiple posts of rabid nonsense.
As for the Christians wanting to convert Buddhists?
Of course they want everyone to have a better life, to truly care for their fellow man, to find forgiveness for their sins, and be able to move on from their prisons of apathy to find the courage necessary to make difficult decisions to change their world for the sake of their families and their countrymen.
Decisions which might place their lives at risk.
Clearly, one brave man’s actions on behalf of others, may save their lives at the cost of his own life.
However, the inaction or apathy of one coward may save his life, at the cost of the lives of many brave men.
The SPDC regime is taking advantage of Buddhism as a tool for political and economic oppression of the Burmese Buddhists, while at the same time forcing their complicity in the rape, torture, murder, persecution, human rights atrocities, and enslavement of millions of their ethnic minority Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, and Animist countrymen.
Perhaps it is time for Buddhists in Burma to realize that Than Shwe uses the passive nature of Buddhists to persecute and kill in the same manner he uses bullets and the destruction of homes and crops. And, that Than Shwe seeks to convert Buddhists to become disciples of his religion of murder, greed, and ethnic revenge, and that those who allow him to do so will share his Karma as a murderer of innocent citizens, children, and Buddhist Monks.
People of Burma, whether you stand-up as Buddhists, Christians, Animists or Atheists, stand-up together in unity and equality as Burmese citizens, and do what is necessary for all Burmese men, women, and children to find freedom, democracy and peace.
Burmese people had suffered horrible exploitation, persecution and humiliation at the hands of the colonialists, religious missionaries and Bengali Muslim Infiltrators (BMI aka Rohigya). Burmese people are very proud people and they will never give in to the BMIs and religious merchants.
There is a huge difference between a Burmese Buddhist who settle in the west and a BMI who infiltrates the border. A Burmese Buddhist has no intention to change the religion of the host country by excessive breeding. The very intention of the BMIs is to undermine the religious composition of the host country by excessive breeding. BMI aka Rohingya men are allowed to marry 4 wives, that in itself is an offence to human rights.
Andrew Chackma said
“Burmese people had suffered horrible exploitation, persecution and humiliation at the hands of the colonialists, religious missionaries and Bengali Muslim Infiltrators (BMI aka Rohigya). Burmese people are very proud people and they will never give in to the BMIs and religious merchants.”
Keep telling yourself all of that.
Never have so many Burmese people suffered such horrible exploitation, persecution, and humiliation as they are suffering right now at the hands of the SPDC and the Burma army.
Is that what you are referring to when you say that Burmese people are very proud?
Because they have the wealthiest, greediest, and cruelest dictators in SE Asia?
I suppose Than Shwe and the SPDC are very proud for turning Burma into their own personal cash cow.
The SPDC are also probably very proud for being able to dominate millions and millions of passive Buddhists by turning their own Buddhist fathers, brothers, and sons into regime shock-troops who will unflinchingly follow their orders to rape, murder, and enslave Burmese ethnic minority citizens, while burning their villages, schools, churches, and crops.
These are the same regime shock-troops who will also unflinchingly kill monks, and each other’s families, like so many dogs in the street if they are ordered to do so.
Is raising their Buddhist sons to carry-out the SPDC war of revenge against unarmed Burmese ethnic minority citizens, enslaving them, extorting them, and subjecting them to starvation and disease something that the Burmese people should be proud of?
Please explain, what are the Burmese people very proud of?
Rod Hardwick says:
“@Burmese people
I think you need to chill out, there are many Burmese people in other countries, would you suggest that they should not be able to gain citizenship in the nation that they reside in???
Most Burmese people came from the North West some came over the sea from the west some came over land, get over it, look beyond colour and religion or please go and exile yourself with Ne Win in some fascist circle jerk”
WHAT A PATHETIC COMMENT FROM ROD HARDWICK,refusing to learn true Burmese history. It is up to the host country to accept Burmese immigrants as new citizens;every country has it own rule.To draw parallell to Rohingas is utterly stupid and rude – to call us jerk.He must be a low lifer. If he has any semblance of intelligence and dignity, he would not have insulted us by calling us jerk.It looks like he is an American. A decendant if those white people who committed genocide against the native americans, so-called Red Indians?
GARRETT is another pathetic person, to confuse the Rohinga issue with the greed of the generals. We believe he is not Burmese. Why does he call himself Garrett?A Welsh name. We don’t think he knows or cares anything about Burmese hsitory.Maybe because his mother had married a man of the country that colonised Burma. Come clean and tell us who you really are, Garrett.Hel really is pathetic.
“Andrew Chackma said
“Burmese people had suffered horrible exploitation, persecution and humiliation at the hands of the colonialists, religious missionaries and Bengali Muslim Infiltrators (BMI aka Rohigya). Burmese people are very proud people and they will never give in to the BMIs and religious merchants.” THIS IS ABSOLUTE TRUTH.
So why is Garrett in denial? Why is he against majority of Burmese people;yes, majority do not like the regime, but that is a completely different matter. We can change that through the ballot box. But to take side with Rohingas against majority Burmese is the case of a colonial remnant showing the true colour.
Neo-colonialism is dead!
You should leave us alone.
There is no teaching like “LOVE YOUR ENEMY” in Buddhism. That’s why Buddhist like “Burmese People” is so hostile to other religions.
You are such a hypocrite to call other “descendant of people who committed genocide against the Native American”. What white American did to Native American is open book everyone knows and it happened a long time ago and every true American believes what happen then is wrong. I bet you never heard of the ethnic cleanses in Burma? Millions of ethnic Burmeses are killed since King Anawrahta become strong Buddhist. His excuse was to unite Burma. Today the ethnic minority persecuted in Burma has well hidden by government and most Burmese don’t know about it or don’t care because they aren’t Buddhist. They are brainwash by government who describe in Burmese as
“Amyo, Batha, Thatana” mean “One race, one language, one religion”. The race is Burman, the language is Burmese and the religion is Buddhism and citizens who do not conform to the regimes version of these face potentially serious consequences.
Are you saying Burmese people never colonize other kingdoms? Burma map was not always look like the map we use today. Burmese King attacked neighbouring countries and united all those countries to form one capital which today call Burma. Never heard of the famous battle between Burmese King and King of Ayutthaya (now call Thailand)? Never heard of the Burmese king burned the temples and stole gold from Buddha statue at Ayutthaya?
British was not the only one who colonized Burma what about Japan? Isn’t Japan Buddhist country? So it is ok when one Buddhist country colonizes other Buddhist country…WOW!!!
If you want to go back to the original religion practice by old Burmese then you should practice Paganism not Buddhism. Pagan and Nat (37 spirits) worship came first, Buddhism came later. No wonder Burma still have no democracy because people like you exist and you don’t deserve democracy (freedom of religions, freedom of speeches, etc.)
Burmese People you are true PATHETIC who doesn’t even know your own Burmese history.
Go back and learn again to the history teaches at Middle School in Burma.
Burmese People you said, “We can change that through the ballot box.”
Tell me which party are you going to vote for?
What a Joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You make me laugh….hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Are you one of those Burmese soldiers who study in Russia and brainwash by government or pretend to be democracy activist who live in Western Country or Government spy? Come clean and tell us who you really are. We aren’t stupid or racist like you.
PS: You may call yourself “Burmese people” but remember you do not represent for all Burmese people.
As usual, Myanmar Patriot4 UMPF aka “Burmese People” is having trouble staying focused, and his reading comprehension skills are dipping below the levels necessary for understanding simple concepts.
Th topic of the article was the plight of the Rohingya refugees who are suffering in Burma and Bangladesh.
The article ended on the note that there is need for an end to the rampant ethnic/religious/political divisions in Burma, and that all Burmese, regardless of their ethnicity, should stop finding reasons to be remain divided, and instead unite against the true enemy, the SPDC regime.
As for Myanmar Patriot4 UMPF aka “Burmese People” worrying about the origin of my name, calling me pathetic, asking why I am in denial, and even worrying about whether my mother married a colonizer of Burma, I think he should be more concerned with why he refers to himself in the “royal we”.(Pluralis Majestatis)
As the saying goes:
“Three groups are permitted that usage: pregnant women, royalty, and schizophrenics.
Which one are you?”
(Maybe you are that Burmese expat wacko in London with the royalty envy complex who fraudulantly calls himself Crown Prince Shwebomin.)
As for the majority of Burmese people (the Burmese people who live in Burma, not Myanmar Patriot4 aka “Burmese People” who lives with the former colonizers of Burma in London), they already voted in the ballot boxes in 1990, and instead of the leaders they elected, Aung San Suu Kyi and the NLD, they received the SPDC-THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH.
And yes, I absolutely take the side of the many persecuted ethnicities of Burma over those who fester in their soiled diapers of apathy, fear, and economic, as well as moral poverty, whose political oppression is self-inflicted, and whose perceived freedom and ethnic superiority is given to them, and taken from them through the barrel of a gun.
Innocent people are starving, suffering, and dying in Burma. Regardless of their ethnicity or religion, lead the way in trying to help them, follow those who are trying to help them, or get the hell out of the way of those who are trying to help them!
Stop finding so many lame excuses to be inhuman towards those who are barely clinging to life.
Dear brother Roger,
Thank you very much for your wonderful article on suffering of Rohingya. I got a very good lesson from you, that is religions, races and colours should not be an obstcle when trying to help people who are suffering from brutal genocide or natural disaster. Thanks
Rohingya does not matter on calling as Rakhine-muslim or Myanmar-muslim but the matter with Bengali.
But, it does not based to order to persecute any foreigner or human beings. You must speculate them at least under any constitution to allow them to enjoy as a human being.
Many anti-Rohingya reports based a bout century and quotating as they are only from Arakan or Burma or unknowing of himself, by ignoring geological and political situations.
However, this report discovered humanism and shared solidariy amongst us. God agree with you..
The country Burma was originally home to fisrstly Pyu and secondly Mon state. Tibetan-Burmas were came from China and invaded Irawaddy delta and introduced Theravada-Buddah thus they are migrants too.
And the Arakan was separated state and Hindu dynasty until 8thC-AD, the last dynasty was Hindu Chandra Dynasty which formed Vaisali. Then the people were migrated from India in about 5000 years ago. Then, various religions influenced from Arab and India which made today Islam and Buddhist.
So,you must discover all before you post against others. However, you are in the context of defector.
Bengalis are “at the brink of extinction”? Give me a break. You gotta be kidding. I just read about one 27 year old Bengali with 53 wives on one exile website. I wonder how much Ben Rogers get paid for this article.
